Jungle Study - WIP

My second daily study. This one about 1 hour in Painter using chalks. I was going to do 4 quick 15 minute studies today, but I just kept working on this one. Probably not the best subject for a quick study. Not a very strong image, it is a little too complicated and requires quite a lot of noodling. Perhaps that is just me.

I need to try and get a medium that I am happy with in Painter, I usually end up with Chalks. I want to get a bit more of that concept arty photoshop feel. Maybe I should just draw it in Photoshop.

Well two down, only 363 to go!

My first drawing study!

Well it's a new year and another chance for me to try an reinvigorate this blog and try and improve my drawing at the same time. I am going to try and do daily drawing studies of approximately 1 hour a day and then post them up here. I hope I can keep it up!

The above is a WIP in painter from a photo off flickr ( I hope they don't mind me using it) of a young girl in a headscarf. This is after about 1 and a half hours, in Painter using pastels. Not sure if this is the right medium, but I'm giving it a go. Skin tones are tough.

Yikes another post!

Look at this, two posts in one day!  Don't get your hopes up it's an oldie.  This is a sketch done at the same time as the Moonscape one and then scanned in.  I love the quality of scanned pencil sketches. I suppose it is because on screen they are bigger than the actual drawing, it is like blowing the sketch up on a photocopier and zooming in on all the pencil marks.

I was going to start inking this tonight but as I am actually falling asleep at the computer I may give it a miss.

How long has it been?

Well it's been a long time since my last post.  As usual I singularly failed to maintain my blog and my new post everyday regime.  Perhaps that was a tad unrealistic!  Well here we are in 2009, or at least half way through and here is my first post of the year. I think I started this drawing some time last year and left it half inked.  Unable to think of anything better to do last night, drawing wise that is, I decided to have another stab at it.  I think it came out OK, bit of a mixture of inking styles and I'm not sure I'm happy with the moon surface our intrepid astobabe is walking on, but at least it looks finished.  This started as a pencil sketch, which was scanned in and then completed in Painter.  The sketch was pretty loose, but had a bit of energy to it.  I still find it hard to draw straight into Painter using the tablet, I don't really feel in control.  Must practice!

Girl Head Doodle

Pootling around in Photoshop.  Turned out not too bad.  Still find it hard to draw directly with Wacom tablet although you can endlessly tweak and change and adapt lines which is good.  This has a certain inky quality.

Diver

Yet another less than successful picture.  Photoshop again, God alone knows how long!  I must have started at about 23.30ish and it is now 1.41 so not exactly a speed painting.  In my defense it did start out quite differently with a woman in a sort of battle suit holding some scribble that was suppose to be a gun.  Crapper than this - if that is possible!  Well at least the pose in this one, while not being anatomically accurate, is at least a bit more dynamic than the original.  Anyway hey ho anther late night another crap picture!  So the world turns.  I was thinking of renaming my blog, "Dom Can Draw ... but only just!"  Perhaps that is a little negative.

Not so speedy speed painting.  Done in Photoshop - lots of scribbling and flipping and layering to get this image - then bits of green light added.  Not sure what it is  - some sort of city.  Not really sure where to go with it - about 1.5 hrs or so.
